"French ambient electronica band Air impart a cosmic touch to the newly restored color edition of George Méliès’ iconic 1902 film Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon). The color reel, hand-painted by Méliès, was discovered in 1993 by the Spanish film archive La Filmoteca de Catalunya and took almost two decades to restore. Unveiled at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and due for release on DVD this coming February, the new print’s kaleidoscopic palette highlights the movie’s hallucinatory aspects—something Air wanted to match with their soundtrack. “We wanted to give a very surrealistic touch to the movie,” says the group’s Jean-Benoît Dunckel. “When the people talk [in the film] we decided to use animal sounds,” explains bandmate Nicolas Godin. “We wanted to do the opposite of Walt Disney. He takes animals and makes them speak with human voices. We have farm noises and elephants."

Wipers were certainly the most overlooked and influencial band coming out of Portland in the early 80's.

Just listen to Potential Suicide and realise how much Kurt Cobain revered Greg Sage's outfit. (Later, Nirvana would cover D7 and Return of the rat).
Listening to Is this real? and Over the edge 30 years later is a real slap to the head.

Apparently this cover was recorded 8 years ago, but there's a big chance we'll hear new music from D'Angelo in 2012.
Really hoping James River will be as good as Voodoo and its videos as iconic as untitled.

In an interview with Pitchork, ?uestlove said:

"The album is pretty much 97% done. He's just finishing his lyrics now. He needs somebody to smack him and take the record away from him because it's pretty much finished...For all intents and purposes, this album is the black version of [The Beach Boys'] Smile-- at best, it will go down in the Smile/There's a Riot Goin' On/Miles Davis'On the Corner. That's what I'm hoping for."

"Back in the 80s, the NME used to sell carefully curated compilations on cassette, spanning all genres of music. As a pre-internet teenager, I had Peel, NME and the local record library as my musical education. This amazing blog has most of the tapes now uploaded for download - a snapshot of a different era. My favourite is We Have Come For Your Children, the 60s garage comp - I was playing my copy just last week but the tape is so stretched now, its great to have it on mp3."

I came upon Jessie Evans Music watching a video shot to promote Sao Paulo's finest party, Voodoo Hop.

She's an american in Berlin, her live show with Residents' "sound contributor" and Iggy Pop's drummer, Toby Dammit, looks sick and she's unfortunately a bit out of the map despise the fact she released a great record in 2009 .

No wave, punk funk, speed cumbia, afro beat, south american 60's, I don't know what the hell this is but i like it.

Some say the king of glissandos would have been bigger than Elvis if it wasn't for his tumultuous life (marrying his 13 years old cousin Myra, being blacklisted in the US and having 2 of his 7 wives dying in dubious ways).

The Killer's competitive nature to outdo anyone else on the bill led to this story:
Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry were on the same night in New York in 1957. They argued about who would go on the featured last set, and since Berry had more hit songs, he won. So Jerry Lee did his set and closed with the wildest version of Great Balls Of Fire, ending by setting his piano on fire. As he passed Chuck backstage, legend has it that Jerry Lee said "Top THAT, nigger!" In the movie made in 1989, this was cleaned up by having Dennis Quaid saying "Top THAT, cat!".

Live at The Star Club is mind blowing, arguably the greatest live album ever and sounds like all of his rage at not being the accepted king of rock & roll surfaced that night, or perhaps he just was in a particularly nasty mood. Or maybe this is the way he sounded on an average night in 1964

"Compared to this, thrash metal sounds tame, the Stooges sound constrained, hardcore punk seems neutered, and the Sex Pistols sound like wimps."

With their new album out in the end of the month, touareg rockers Tinariwen chose to get back to basics and to give pride of place to acoustic sounds recorded in the desert.
Tassili is described by their former manager as "an attempt to nail down poetry of ishumar adventurers sitting around a campfire, sharing cigarettes, stories, songs and a guitar. This had always been the context in which Tinariwen's music was heard before they picked up electric guitars, added bass and percussion and went global."

O Lendario Chucrobillyman is the best thing coming out of Curitiba's incredible rock scene. With bands like Hillbilly Rawhide, Sick Sick Sinners, As Diabatz and its Psycho Carnival every year, it makes you wonder why some people living there are still trying to make some horribly produced electro and throw parties where djs play Lady Gaga and Friendly Fires when they could be downing beers listening to some great rock and roll down the road.

Hearing The Chicken Album and seeing the man live in London turned me into a groupie for life. Knowing that he does everything himself, from recording to mixing, creating artworks and performing live is also admirable.

I was puzzled by the Planningtorock video, with its Matthew Barney meets Guillermo Del Toro visuals and its very monotonous track. I was even more surprised when i read the one and only person in the band is a woman and not a modern Axl Rose gone Disco.

Those who know me know i'm a big fan of Ivan Smagghe, his work with Black Strobe or It's a Fine Line and i had the chance to produce a couple of radio shows with him back in the Diesel Radio time.
The man just never disappoints me and i played his Live At Robert Johnson mix to death, although others didn't seem to share my enthusiasm.

Being busy producing remixes, a new Battant record, making music with Tim Paris and conceiving a new cd for Colette, Ivan only posted sporadically on his blog since early 2011.

So what a nice surprise to find this new edit (posted in february) of a mysterious track no one seems to know anything about.

I was reading this morning that when the saxophone player in The Afrika 70 left the band, Fela decided that instead of finding a replacement, he would learn the instrument himself.
So the opening section of Gentleman was recorded only a few months after he picked up the instrument.
Gentleman was re released last year through Knitting Factory with the 25 minutes long Confusion, also recorded circa '73-'74 which is also one of his finest tunes.

That video came out almost a year ago, but i sadly missed it, and like most of us just discovered Connan Mockasin's album "Please Turn Me Into the Snat", released on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound label in june 2010.

Shame this new zealander doesn't get more attention than a review in NME, this is as good as it will probably get in 2011.

Just bought these 2 gems online!
They'll soon stand on my shelf next to The Princess Bride, Weird Science, Honey i shrunk the kids, Ferris Bueller's day off, Flight of the navigator and the others.

I could finally find out the name of that film i saw on a plane to America when i was 11 by googling: kids baseball giant dog film.
Never met anyone who actually knows The Last Starfighter, the story of a teenager who becomes a pilot after beating all the highscores on an arcade game in his crappy trailer park.

Let's now see if they stand the test of time.

I posted a track from body talk part 1 a few months ago, and knew there was supposed to be 3 releases before the end of 2010 but i didnt't understand at that time that the final chapter was going to be the album, the best tracks from the first, the second and 5 new ones.

Robyn on Body Talk:

“I’m going to keep mixing up my tours with studio time and am hoping to stick to this new way of releasing music next year. This is the third, last part and completion of the Body Talk album. It was never my goal to break some kind of a world record in how many songs I could release in a year. Although I think it would count as a pretty good attempt, it’s been about the process for me. It’s been very interesting to try and figure out a more organic way of making music. A way that is unbiased and has it’s starting point in what feels logical to me, but also to the listeners.

Even though it was never a conceptual idea, but a practical solution to the problem of getting bored with just doing one thing at a time, it has influenced not only the music, but all the visual content for the album as well. And the way I’ve communicated with press and listeners. It’s been amazing to share the process with you. As soon as I have had an idea of what I’m doing so have the fans and that interaction has been super interesting and fun to me. As I’m writing this, I am still mixing the third album.

There are 5 new songs ready to be released and I’m also including music from Body talk pt 1 and 2 to complete this body of work in what will make the turbo version of the Body Talk album. Thanks for tagging along with me on this ride!”

Body Talk is out the 22nd Nov in US and Scandinavia and it might be the best pop album of the year.

A couple of us, biographies aficionados, got really excited when we heard about Keith Richards' book coming out.
I didn't finish it yet but I already can say that it's way above most of the mediocre stuff that come out these days (Ozzy and Nikki Sixx give me my money back) and it is for once pretty well written.
Hope it will join the pantheon soon:

For some people, Alexander Sokurov's film will always be "that movie with the single 96-minute Steadicam sequence shot", beating Hitchcock and others to the no cut game.
It took 4 years to prepare the only day of shooting in St Petersburg's Hermitage Museum, cast the 2000 comedians and get everybody ready to do it right for the hour and half shot.
Impressive.

Suuns LP is called Zeroes QC, was co produced by Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes and just dropped on the excellent Secretly Canadian label and I've been listening to it over and over since then.
I was a bit dubious at first when I saw the artwork and noticed that the album was labelled as shoegaze (???), but this isn't another boring "witch house" or hipster goth album.
